The program

Mares first, and a breeder who rides them

Buckshot Farms sits just outside Lincoln, Nebraska. The goal is simple to say and hard to do: breed reining horses with the ability to compete at the top level of the sport.

Cori shows the mares she breeds

Cori Sampson Vokoun makes the breeding decisions at Buckshot Farms, and she has personally shown most of the mares in the program. Few breeders do.

That time in the saddle tells her things a pedigree cannot. She knows how each mare thinks, how she reacts to pressure, how she handled training and big arenas, and how she held up to the physical demands of reining. All of it goes into choosing the next cross.

Selection

How a mare earns her place

Pedigree

We follow female families. Elite genetics are scarcest on the bottom side of a pedigree, so daughters of iconic producing mares come first when we evaluate a mare. Our band includes daughters of Hot Hollywood Jewels, Whizin Off Sparks, Nestle Quik Chic, Starjac Miss and Miss Whizzletown.

Record

A show record, a production record, or ideally both. Every resident broodmare has been a major event finalist or produced one. Our younger mares are still building their records in the show pen.

Genetic health

We keep only mares that test negative on both the 5-panel and the 6-panel genetic tests.

Small on purpose

About ten foals a year

We breed fewer than 20 foals a year and average about ten. In 2025 that was enough to rank Buckshot Farms 20th on the NRHA's list of leading breeders.
